Climate Knowledge Brokers Workshop

The 2013 Climate Knowledge Brokers (CKB) workshop brought together 35 participants from 17 organisations to enhance the sharing of climate and development information. The event focused on evaluating seven collaborative projects, sharing lessons on user engagement and internet marketing, and discussing the future governance and funding of the CKB Group. Key technical outputs highlighted include the reegle Tagging API and the Knowledge Navigator widget, both designed to reduce information duplication and improve content discoverability. Participants identified a critical need to move beyond 'one way communication' and better integrate local and indigenous knowledge to reach diverse stakeholders in developing countries.

• The CKB Group has developed and deployed two primary shared tools: the reegle Tagging API, which automatically extracts key terms and geographical locations from documents to harmonise tagging, and the Knowledge Navigator, a widget that directs users to the most relevant of 103 trusted climate and development information platforms.
• Seven collaborative projects involving 13 organisations have been implemented, including the InfoAmazonia Geojournalism Project, which uses satellite imagery and research data to report on the Amazon basin and attracted over 21,000 visitors in nine months, and the Valorando Naturaleza platform for reporting on ecosystem markets in Latin America.
• Knowledge brokers identified several systemic failures in their approach, specifically the tendency toward 'one way communication' and 'portal proliferation', where funders prefer creating new websites over improving existing ones, leading to information overload for users.
• There is a significant gap in reaching stakeholders in developing countries due to an over-reliance on English and a failure to capture local and indigenous knowledge, with some users trusting local sources more than international organisations.
• User research methods, such as 'User Labs' and in-depth surveys, were found to be more effective than analytics tools alone for obtaining granular feedback and building lasting relationships with stakeholders.
• The CKB Group's impact assessment indicates that while the group has enhanced awareness and reduced some duplication of effort, there is a lack of systematic evidence that these collaborations have led to improved long-term actions or easier information access for end users.
