Climate change and water resources planning, development and management in Zimbabwe

This issues paper examines opportunities for climate change adaptation in Zimbabwe's water resources sector to inform the National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS). It highlights the critical dependence of agriculture, power production, and mining on water availability and uses models to estimate potential impacts for 2050 and 2080.

• Water is fundamental to Zimbabwe's economy and social well-being, with irrigated agriculture being the primary water-consuming sector and rain-fed agriculture relying on consistent rainfall.
• Zimbabwe's power production and mining sectors are heavily dependent on water, specifically the flow of the Zambezi River for hydropower and thermal power station cooling.
• The government of Zimbabwe is developing a National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS) to integrate climate change considerations across all economic sectors, with a focus on adaptation to minimize social and economic impacts.
