Getting climate smart for disasters

This policy brief introduces the 'Getting Climate Smart for Disasters' project and the Climate Smart Disaster Risk Management (CSDRM) approach, which aims to integrate climate change challenges with disaster risk reduction (DRR) and development, specifically within the context of South Asia.

• The Climate Smart Disaster Risk Management (CSDRM) approach is designed to identify opportunities and barriers for integrating climate change challenges with development and disaster risk reduction, while also identifying policy innovation and monitoring integration progress.
• To determine how to achieve effective integration, the project analyzes two specific barriers: the divergence between the priorities of ordinary people and DRR institutions, and the requirement for diversified livelihoods to lower climate dependency.
• The CSDRM approach is intended to serve as a guide for policymaking, programme development, and strategic planning, and it should be utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of current DRM programmes, projects, and policies amidst a changing climate.
