Champion CSA Screening Methodology

This report details the methodology for selecting 'champion' Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) options in Nepal, focusing on a screening process that combines expert judgment with farmer feedback to identify 17 champion CSAs or packages across different agro-ecological regions.

• The selection of champion CSAs follows a four-step process: selecting potential CSAs for evaluation, documenting evidence, consolidating results, and validating and finalizing the champion CSAs. Evaluation relies on a 'CSA screening process' involving experts who assess CSA qualification and farmers who assess feasibility and suitability for local climatic vulnerability. Evidence is gathered via on-farm experimentation, piloting data, stakeholder opinions, key informant and household surveys, and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to determine farmer preferences.
• The methodology resulted in a final list of 17 champion CSAs or CSA packages for Nepal. These are distributed across agro-ecological regions: nine for the high-hill region, 12 for the mid-hill region, and 10 for the Terai region, with six CSAs identified as champions for all three regions.
• Analysis of farmer preferences indicates that food security is given overwhelmingly high importance regardless of gender or location, whereas gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) dimensions are given low importance when selecting CSA options.
