Non-Motorised Transport in Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS)

This policy brief advocates for the integration of Non-Motorised Transport (NMT), such as walking and cycling, in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region to combat rising greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector and enhance city livability and tourism.

• Since the early 1990s, the Greater Mekong Sub-Region has experienced rapid economic growth, with GDP averaging nearly 8% annually, accompanied by rapid urbanisation in small-to-medium sized cities that are becoming significant tourist destinations.
• The transport sector is a significant and increasing source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in regional cities, yet these cities frequently fail to prioritise sustainable urban transport planning as a requirement for livability.
• Non-Motorised Transport (NMT), consisting of cycling and walking, is identified as a means to improve environmental quality by lowering GHG emissions, providing health benefits, and increasing the touristic appeal and livability of cities.
