Better Life Alliance in Zambia: Climate change mitigation as a co-benefit of improved landscape, agroforestry, soil, and fertilizer management

The Better Life Alliance (BLA) project in Zambia's Luangwa valley reduced greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 902,531 tCO2e/yr, primarily through the prevention of savanna degradation and conversion. The project utilized a business model linking conservation to market incentives and promoted agro-ecological soil management and reduced postharvest losses for crops including groundnuts, maize, rice, and soybeans.

• The Better Life Alliance (BLA) project achieved an estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction of 902,531 tCO2e/yr, which is comparable to saving 2,089,550 barrels of oil. Approximately 85% of this reduction resulted from avoiding the conversion and degradation of savannas.
