Maintenance of Hydropower Potential in Rwanda Through Ecosystem Restoration

This case study describes the Government of Rwanda's efforts to protect the hydroelectric sector by restoring the Rugezi-Bulera-Ruhondo watershed, while implementing agricultural measures to support affected rural livelihoods.

• The Government of Rwanda implemented measures to restore the Rugezi-Bulera-Ruhondo watershed to protect the future management and generation capacity of the hydroelectric sector from the effects of climate change on precipitation patterns. These actions included banning agricultural and pastoral activities along the shores of Lakes Bulera and Ruhondo and stopping drainage activities in the Rugezi Wetlands.
• Because the watershed protection policies restricted rural households' access to key resources and harmed livelihood productivity, the Government introduced agricultural and watershed management measures to offset these impacts and improve long-term sustainability.
