Review of climate service needs and opportunities in Rwanda

This desk review supports the USAID-funded Rwanda Climate Services for Agriculture project, which seeks to improve climate risk management for nearly one million farmers by 2019. The review analyzes climate-related risks to Rwanda's agricultural sector, existing climate information products, involved institutions, and delivery channels for climate services.

• Rwanda's agricultural sector and farming population face an increasingly serious challenge due to a variable and changing climate. Climate information services—which encompass historical, monitored, and forecast data, as well as value-added products like crop yield forecasts, management advisories, and pest and disease risk warnings—are being developed to help farmers manage risk and build resilience across all time scales.
• The Rwanda Climate Services for Agriculture project, funded by USAID, has a goal of benefiting nearly one million farmers by 2019. The project intends to transform the national economy and rural farming communities through improved climate risk management and climate services.
