Outlook : Special Edition on African climate science

This special edition of Climate and Development Outlook describes the scoping phase of the Future Climate For Africa (FCFA) programme, a five-year international research initiative funded by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The programme focuses on improving the scientific understanding of sub-Saharan African climate on decadal timescales and enhancing the communication and uptake of this information for long-term climate-resilient development strategies.

• The Future Climate For Africa (FCFA) programme identifies a knowledge gap regarding how long-term climate information is utilized in African decision-making, noting that while seasonal information is increasingly used in humanitarian and development actions, the barriers and opportunities for long-term information uptake are less understood.
• FCFA posits that improving the accuracy of climate information alone is insufficient for better decision-making; equal or greater importance must be placed on how that information is communicated and used, as well as the influence of institutional settings, political economy, and social and economic processes.
• The 18-month scoping phase of the FCFA programme evaluates the needs of long-term climate information users against current scientific limitations through four case studies in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically focusing on Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, and the cities of Accra and Maputo.
