Exploring the linkages and guiding concepts relevant to Climate Change, Agriculture and Development: A Detailed Resource

This report explores the intersections between climate change, agriculture, and development, specifically analyzing conceptual frameworks and their application within the agriculture sector. It is part of a CDKN-funded project examining the use of climate compatible development (CCD) principles in African agricultural research and advisory services.

• Agriculture serves as a primary economic pillar and livelihood source for many developing countries, occupying more than one-third of the Earth's land area. While it provides food and fibre, it also poses a significant threat to ecosystem services, which are defined as the benefits humans derive from ecosystems.
• There is a critical need to balance the requirement for increased agricultural productivity with the maintenance of farming landscapes that support various ecosystem services. Addressing this requires responses to the primary drivers influencing policy and practices across all levels.
• The document analyzes the overlaps and interpretations of climate change concepts and conceptual frameworks as they relate to agriculture and development. This work supports a project investigating the adoption of climate compatible development (CCD) principles within agricultural research and advisory services in Africa.
