Understanding patterns of climate resilient economic development: a synthesis

This synthesis report identifies data availability and quality as primary constraints in analyzing climate resilient economic development, noting that the lack of high-resolution and disaggregated data hinders evidence-based conclusions and the understanding of distributional patterns.

• Data availability and quality are significant constraints for developing case studies on climate resilience because adaptation is context-specific and requires high geographical resolution for meaningful conclusions. Data regarding adaptation efforts and impacts are often unavailable, costly, or difficult to locate.
• Analyzing the distributional patterns of development is hindered by a rarity of highly disaggregated household data, a problem that becomes more acute when shifting focus from a national scale to a municipal or city scale.
• Statistical agencies frequently fail to collect necessary indicators, and existing data often suffer from opaque methodologies, gaps, and inconsistent geographical boundaries. Consequently, the project's findings on the relationship between economic development and climate resilience are based on a synthesis of four case studies rather than robust data-driven analysis of individual cases, as quantitative attribution and general equilibrium modelling remain challenging.
