Climate data and projections: Supporting evidence-based decision-making in the Caribbean

This policy brief describes the CARibbean Weather Impacts Group (CARIWIG) project, which provides downscaled climate data and simulation tools to help Caribbean governments integrate climate change considerations into planning and investment to build resilience.

• The CARibbean Weather Impacts Group (CARIWIG) project, funded by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), provides free access to downscaled climate data, historical data, and future projections for various climate variables via an online portal.
• CARIWIG offers a suite of free simulation tools, including a regional drought analysis tool, a tropical storm model, and a weather generator, to help decision-makers understand potential impacts from temperature changes, rainfall, tropical storms, and drought.
• While CARIWIG data is a useful aid for national-level decision-making, the downscaling process increases uncertainty regarding the timing and scale of impacts; therefore, the data should inform decisions rather than serve as the sole basis for action.
• The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) provides training and support for using CARIWIG outputs to help build climate resilience.
