The benefits of clean energy policies in Bangladesh

This case study, produced by the LEDS GP Benefits Working Group and the RALI project, evaluates the socio-economic and environmental advantages of transitioning from fossil fuel-based energy to renewable energy in Bangladesh. Utilizing modelling from the USAID Catalyzing Clean Energy in Bangladesh (CCEB) program, the document argues that clean energy alternatives provide cost-effective greenhouse gas mitigation and affordable electricity, making them a superior choice for long-term energy planning compared to conventional sources.

• Modelling analysis indicates that increasing the proportion of clean energy in Bangladesh's power generation mix by 2030, compared to a 'business-as-usual' scenario, could result in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%, the creation of up to 55,000 full-time equivalent domestic jobs, and the saving of up to 27,000 lives and over US$5 billion (BDT 420 billion).
• The CCEB program's analysis, which utilized plant-level data from the Bangladesh power sector, suggests that diverting energy investments from fossil fuel sources to renewable energy will improve public health and create jobs in Bangladesh.
