G20 holds keys to our safe climate future

A statement by Tony de Brum (Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Marshall Islands) and Maria de Fátima Monteiro Jardim (Minister of Environment of Angola) urging G20 leaders meeting in Antalya, Turkey, to drive ambition for the Paris Climate Change Conference.

• Current emission reduction targets are insufficient, putting the world on a trajectory for approximately 3°C or more of global warming, which threatens low-lying island states, vulnerable coastal states, and least developed countries, while risking global security and economic stability.
• The authors propose three requirements for the Paris Agreement to ensure ambition: setting a common goal to fully decarbonize the global economy by mid-century, establishing a process to increase targets every five years starting in 2020, and ensuring industrialized countries provide a credible path to deliver $100 billion annually in climate finance by 2020.
• Investing in low-carbon cities could result in $17 trillion in savings for the global economy by 2050 and prevent annual emissions equivalent to those of India by 2030, according to research from the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate.
• The G20 is urged to fulfill its 2009 promise to phase out fossil fuel subsidies; an Overseas Development Institute report indicates the G20 spends nearly $90 billion annually on fossil fuel exploration, which is more than double the industry's own investment.
• The G20 holds significant potential for the energy transition, possessing 75% of the world's total renewable energy deployment potential and over 70% of investment potential through 2030.
