Women and climate change

This report by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network argues that gender considerations must be central to climate policies and programmes in developing countries, as women are differentially affected by climate change and face existing gender inequalities that exacerbate their vulnerability.

• Climate change has specific implications for women, who already face gender inequalities resulting in higher and deeper rates of poverty than men. Resource scarcity caused by climate change particularly impacts women in regions where they serve as the primary managers of water, fuelwood, and farming.
• Gender-sensitive climate policies and programmes are necessary in developing countries for several reasons: women are affected differently by climate change; roles and responsibilities differ by gender, affecting action capacity; disparities in power and voice can lead to women's priorities being ignored; empowered women are generally less vulnerable to disasters; and women can be equal partners in the low carbon transition.
