Scaling up pathways for climate-smart agriculture technologies and practices in Nepal

This report examines the policy provisions, opportunities, and challenges associated with scaling up climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies and practices in Nepal, utilizing a qualitative approach involving desk studies, expert consultations, and field observations.

• While climate-smart technologies are recognized in policies and strategies, they lack sufficient attention during the planning and implementation phases.
• CSA techniques suffer from poor documentation and dissemination, are not fully integrated into extension manuals, and often lack scientific evidence tailored to specific agro-ecological zones, soil types, and rainfall patterns.
• Implementation of CSA is hindered by poor coordination between government departments, a reliance on non-sustainable project-based approaches, weak capacity for adaptation and mitigation across sectors, and limited local availability of necessary materials and service providers.
• Economic barriers prevent poor smallholder farmers from adopting high-cost CSA technologies, specifically machine-based zero-tillage and solar-pump based irrigation.
