From Research to Results: Greener Pathways for the SADC Region

This policy brief examines how the mono-cultural nature of economies within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which are largely dependent on minerals or agriculture, influences five priority policy intersections for social, environmental, and economic development.

• More than 50% of countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have mono-cultural economies where fewer than eight sectors account for 75% of exports, with a primary dependence on mineral resources or agriculture.
• The region's social, environmental, and economic development is defined by five priority policy intersections: Mineral Extractive Development and Investments in Health; Food Security and Education; Water Security and Energy Access; Rural Growth and Development anchored in Natural Resource Management; and Climate Resilience and Social Protection.
• The brief is part of the 'A Green Guide (GG): Aligning political and social contexts for Green and Inclusive Growth' project, which treats 'greening' as a process rather than just an outcome to improve the practical understanding of links between development and climate change.
