Contribution of the land sector to a 1.5 °C world

The research identifies that the land sector could feasibly contribute approximately 30% of the global mitigation required by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5 °C, though this requires significantly more effort than a 2 °C target.

• Transforming the land sector through measures in agriculture, forestry, wetlands, and bioenergy could sustainably provide about 30% of the global mitigation needed by 2050 to meet the 1.5 °C target, which equates to 15 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) per year.
• Achieving the 1.5 °C temperature goal through land-sector measures will require substantially more effort compared to the requirements for a 2 °C target.
