AFRICAN FOOD SYSTEMS TRANSFORMATION COLLECTIVE

The African Climate Foundation (ACF) has established the African Food Systems Transformation Collective to address food insecurity and climate vulnerability in Africa. The Collective uses a three-tiered structure of conveners, research bodies, and advocacy networks to build a local evidence base and coordinate philanthropic investments toward sustainable, regenerative agriculture and systemic food system transformation.

• African food systems are highly vulnerable to climate change due to a heavy reliance on rainfed production and limited adaptive capacity. This vulnerability affects the entire value chain, from farm-level production to distribution, processing, and retail. Currently, 346 million people in Africa face food insecurity, representing more than a third of the 927 million people globally affected.
• Current investment trends in African food systems are viewed as undermining sustainability and food security. Primary agriculture investments often focus on scaling industrial agriculture, while investments in retail, distribution, and processing tend to support the consolidation of market share for a small number of firms.
• The African Food Systems Transformation Collective is established to inform philanthropic investments and support a coordinated strategy for sustainable food system transformation in Africa. Its goals include building a local evidence base, supporting advocacy and campaigning by linking research with advocacy organisations, and identifying key interventions for philanthropic support.
• The Collective operates through a three-tiered structure: conveners (the ACF and UNESCO Chair in African Food Systems), research bodies (including CCRED, PLAAS, and the Sam Moyo Institute), and a steering committee composed of African and global advocacy networks (such as AFSA, PELUM, and IPES-Food). This structure is designed to create feedback loops where advocacy groups inform the research agenda and use research outputs for their campaigns.
