This endline report by FSD Africa and FSD Uganda analyzes the financial strategies, income, and expenses of refugees and host communities in Uganda between January 2020 and November 2021. The study focuses on the settlements of Nakivale, Bidi Bidi, and Palorinya, as well as Kampala, evaluating the impact of the Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) project and the COVID-19 pandemic on financial health and service usage.

This fact sheet presents highlights from the endline survey of the Financial Inclusion for Refugees Project (FI4R), conducted by FSD Uganda and FSD Africa. The project aimed to support financial service providers in offering services to refugees and host communities in Uganda, utilizing financial diaries to track livelihood strategies and the impact of new financial products between Q1 2020 (baseline) and Q4 2021 (endline).

This report details the results of the third round of financial diaries conducted by BFA Global for the Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) project in Uganda. The study tracks the financial strategies of refugees in the Bidi Bidi, Palorinya, and Nakivale settlements, focusing on the impact of COVID-19 on income and the potential for digitizing savings group products through partners like VisionFund Uganda, Rural Finance Initiative (RUFI), and Equity Bank Uganda Limited.

This fact sheet presents the results of a baseline survey conducted in March 2020 as part of the Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) project. The project, launched by FSD Uganda and FSD Africa, aims to support financial service providers (FSPs) in offering services to refugees and host communities in Uganda to build resilience and drive access to basic financial tools.

This report analyzes the financial lives of refugees in Uganda, highlighting a shift from regular employment to self-employment and the adoption of new financial tools like mobile money and ASCAs. While overall earnings have decreased for many, women have seen significant gains in employment and income. The study emphasizes the role of 'grit' in adaptation, the importance of remittances (especially in Kampala), and the continued challenges regarding healthcare access and high costs of basic needs like charcoal.

The Financial Inclusion for Refugees (FI4R) project, launched in 2019 by FSD Africa in partnership with FSD Uganda, Access to Finance Rwanda, and BFA Global, aims to provide financial services to forcibly displaced people (FDPs) and host communities. The project focuses on overcoming barriers such as insufficient documentation and perceived risk to enable refugees to access loans, savings, and digital payments.
