Specifically, the World Bank estimated that Latin America, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa will generate 143 million additional climate migrants by 2050, while sea level rise has already submerged eight islands in the western Pacific.
- Environmental degradation and climate change threaten global food security and biodiversity. Approximately 25% of the world's total land area is degraded, and 95% could be degraded by 2050. One million animal and plant species face extinction, including the Bramble Cay melomys, the first mammal reported to go extinct due to climate change. Additionally, cereal costs could increase by up to 29% by 2050.
- Marginalised populations face the highest risks, with climate change potentially causing GDP losses of 64% in the most vulnerable countries. In urban areas, 215 million poor people could be exposed to average summer temperatures over 35C if current greenhouse gas trajectories continue. 'Compound extremes'—simultaneous or sequential climate hazards—are becoming more common, such as concurrent droughts and heatwaves in southern and central Africa.
- While adaptation activities have increased, they often consist of small changes rather than the transformative shifts required. Nature-based solutions, such as restoring mangroves (which store 6 billion tonnes of carbon), are cost-effective alternatives to engineered sea walls. However, a significant finance gap exists; adaptation costs in developing countries are estimated to be five to 10 times higher than current public adaptation finance.
- The economic cost of inaction is significantly higher than the cost of mitigation and adaptation. Limiting warming to 2C instead of 4C could save USD 17.5 trillion annually by 2100. Failure to limit warming to 1.5C saw inaction costs rise from USD 1.3 trillion per year in 2010 to over USD 5 trillion per year in 2020. Furthermore, climate change is projected to increase the number of people in extreme poverty from 32 million to 132 million by 2030.
