BIODIVERSITY IN THE UMKHOMAZI CATCHMENT

A BioBlitz survey in the upper uMkhomazi catchment recorded approximately 330 plant species and 40 bird species, confirming the presence of several threatened and regionally significant species.

• A BioBlitz survey conducted in January 2026 across priority sites in the upper uMkhomazi catchment—specifically Inzinga, Qutsheni, Nguga / Mapanekeni, and Stoffelton—recorded approximately 330 plant species, 40 bird species, and 25 insect species, along with a low but important representation of reptiles, arachnids, amphibians, mammals, and fungi.
• The survey confirmed the presence of several threatened species, including the Southern Bald Ibis and Wattled Crane (both listed as vulnerable), and the Cape Vulture and Martial Eagle (both listed as endangered).
• The presence of apex predators such as the Verreaux’s Eagle, scavengers like vultures, and pollinator-supported plant species indicates that the landscape maintains intact ecological processes necessary for long-term ecosystem stability.
