UMZIMVUBU CATCHMENT PARTNERSHIP

The Umzimvubu Catchment Partnership (UCP), established in 2013, works to restore the Umzimvubu River system, a critical part of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area. The partnership addresses pressures from climate change, invasive species, and poor land management to ensure water security for over two million people and the preservation of biodiversity. Key achievements include the clearance of invasive wattle trees to restore spring flows, the creation of over 5,000 conservation and rehabilitation jobs, and the protection of 43 natural springs for human consumption.

• The Umzimvubu catchment is a critical water resource located within the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area, providing water to more than two million people for drinking, agriculture, and livestock farming. However, the river system is classified as vulnerable due to rapid degradation and only about 1% of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area is protected.
• The catchment faces significant environmental pressures, including climate change, overgrazing, uncontrolled fires, and the rapid growth of water-thirsty invasive tree species, which have caused rivers and springs to run dry and led to widespread soil erosion.
• The UCP has achieved measurable ecological and socio-economic outcomes, including the clearance of 367 hectares of alien trees, the protection of 43 natural springs for human consumption, and the creation of over 5,000 jobs through conservation and rehabilitation projects.
• The partnership emphasizes a collaborative, community-led approach that integrates indigenous knowledge and involves traditional leaders. Current strategies through 2028 focus on building a knowledge hub, increasing collaboration, and mentoring a new generation of local young leaders to implement nature-based solutions.
