CONSUMER SEAFOOD GUIDE

The Consumer Seafood Guide, published by WWF South Africa in December 2025, is a pocket reference tool designed to help consumers make environmentally responsible seafood choices using a 'traffic light' system. It provides guidance on identifying sustainable species based on the species type, the method of capture or farming, and the origin of the seafood.

• To determine the sustainability status of seafood, consumers are advised to identify three specific factors: the species, the method of capture or farming, and the location of origin.
• The guide distinguishes between 'Red' list species and 'No sale' species; the latter are illegal to sell and are reserved exclusively for recreational fishers who possess a valid permit and follow specific regulations.
• The guide lists specific sustainable (Green) examples, including SA pole caught Albacore tuna from the Atlantic Ocean, MSC certified Hake from SA & Namibia, and ASC certified Prawns from Vietnam & Ecuador.
