At the same table: small-scale fishers find power in partnership

The South Coast Small-Scale and Community Fishing Forum, established in April 2023 with WWF support, represents over 500 fishers across eight co-operatives in KwaZulu-Natal. The Forum has improved co-operative governance by enabling bank account openings and tax compliance, and has provided technical training in skipper skills, species identification, and leadership. Strategic partnerships have also created local employment and enhanced maritime safety, promoting a co-management approach to marine conservation and community livelihoods.

• The South Coast Small-Scale and Community Fishing Forum was officially established in April 2023 with support from WWF, representing over 500 small-scale fishers across eight co-operatives.
• The Forum has improved the formal operational capacity of co-operatives by strengthening internal governance and compliance, specifically helping them open bank accounts and obtain tax compliance certification from the South African Revenue Service.
• Capacity building initiatives have provided specialized training to hundreds of fishers: 54 received governance and leadership skills from the National Development Agency, 110 were trained in species identification by Imvelo Blue to handle bycatch, and eight received skipper certificates via the Moses Kotane Research Institute.
• A partnership between WWF and the Umzumbe Local Municipality resulted in a community development project that provides employment for eight local community members.
