RENEWABLE ENERGY IN INDIA

This fact sheet describes the Green Power Market Development Group (GPMDG) India, a partnership between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched in January 2013. The initiative aims to increase the use of renewable energy among large commercial and industrial consumers in India by addressing policy and market barriers and sharing best practices.

It focuses on scaling up renewable energy use for large commercial and industrial energy consumers by addressing policy and market barriers and collaborating with government, technology providers, and financiers.
• GPMDG began its operations in Bangalore, Karnataka, where it facilitated projects totaling 110MW during its first year. The group also worked with regulators to establish a stable, long-term policy framework for the deployment of solar power in Karnataka.
• In 2014, GPMDG expanded its activities to Chennai to leverage the region's renewable energy potential and develop a favorable policy environment in Tamil Nadu. This includes a first-of-its-kind initiative with the Mahindra World City (MWC) Chengalpet campus to evaluate increasing renewables in the park's energy mix.
• GPMDG launched a Collaborative Solar Purchasing Project in Bangalore to aggregate demand for on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) systems among neighboring businesses. The project's goals include accelerating solar technology deployment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, decreasing transaction costs for rooftop solar, and encouraging corporate investment in renewable energy.
• The GPMDG initiative is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Caterpillar Foundation, and the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
