Carbon Opportunity Cost Calculation Tool

The World Resources Institute has released the Carbon Opportunity Cost Calculation Tool (Version 1.0), an Excel-based resource that automates the estimation of carbon lost from plants and soils when land is converted from native vegetation to agriculture. The tool provides default factors for nearly 90 agricultural products across 10 regions and 5 countries, allowing users to input product volumes to determine land occupation in hectares and carbon opportunity cost in carbon dioxide equivalent.

• The Carbon Opportunity Cost (COC) is defined as the total volume of carbon lost from soils and plants on land used for agriculture compared to what would be stored if the land remained as native vegetation.
• The calculation tool automates the COC process by integrating spatial and statistical data on native and agricultural carbon stocks, crop yields, spatial distribution, and livestock feed efficiency. It contains default land occupation and COC factors for approximately 90 agricultural products across 5 countries and 10 regions.
• Users can generate estimates of land occupation in hectares and COC in carbon dioxide equivalent by entering the volumes of products produced or purchased in kilograms, with the option to refine these estimates using their own specific data on yields and carbon stocks.
