China's Overseas Investments in the Wind and Solar Industries

This research paper examines the trends and drivers of China's overseas investments in the wind and solar industries, analyzing at least 124 investments across 33 countries over a ten-year period.

• China has made at least 124 investments in the solar and wind industries across 33 countries over the last decade. Of these, 81 were in the solar industry, 41 were in the wind industry, and 2 spanned both. For the investments where data was available, 54 investments totaled nearly US$40 billion in cumulative value, and 53 investments added nearly 6,000 MW of cumulative installed capacity.
• The majority of these investments focused on electricity generation, specifically wind farms (27 investments) and solar projects (41 investments), which were predominantly executed via joint ventures. Other investments targeted manufacturing facilities and the establishment of sales and marketing offices.
• Investments were primarily concentrated in developed nations, specifically the United States, Germany, Italy, and Australia, though some developing nations such as South Africa, Pakistan, and Ethiopia also received investment.
• Chinese overseas investment is driven by a combination of 'push' factors, such as manufacturing capacity exceeding domestic demand and government policy support; 'pull' factors from host countries, including tax breaks, feed-in tariffs, bilateral cooperation agreements, or policies discouraging imports; and 'enabling' financial support from state-owned banks.
