People, Planet, Justice: Understanding and Countering Nature Crime

This report by the World Resources Institute examines five types of nature crime and their intersection with other criminal activities, proposing five broad strategies for policymakers and civil society to combat these threats to climate, biodiversity, and social justice.

• Nature crime consists of five primary illegal activities—mining, logging, fishing, wildlife trade, and land grabbing—which contribute to a 'triple crisis' of biodiversity loss, climate change, and social injustice.
• Nature crime is characterized by its convergence with other serious organized crimes, including human rights violations, financial crimes such as money laundering and tax evasion, narcotics and arms dealing, human trafficking for forced labor, and violence against land and environmental defenders.
• The report proposes five strategies to combat nature crime: strengthening legal frameworks and enforcement, fighting linked financial crime and corruption, protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples, rural communities, and workers, expanding multi-sector approaches, and using innovative technologies.
