Climate Ambition Summit Highlights Important Progress But More Action Needed in 2021

The World Resources Institute acknowledges a growing momentum toward net-zero transformations following the Climate Ambition Summit, noting new targets from the EU, UK, Colombia, and China. However, it emphasizes that too few major economies provided bold 2030 emission cuts or the financial mobilization necessary for developing nations, specifically noting the failure of developed countries to provide clear signals on meeting the $100 billion annual climate finance commitment.

• The Climate Ambition Summit saw several countries announce or confirm emission targets, including the European Union, United Kingdom, and Colombia confirming 2030 targets, and China announcing targets to support its goal of carbon neutrality before 2060.
• Argentina's pledge to reach net-zero by 2050 and its updated 2030 emissions reduction target means that the majority of G20 countries now have net-zero targets.
• Non-state actor commitment to net-zero has grown through the Race to Zero campaign, with over 2,500 cities, states, businesses, and investors participating, including an investor alliance managing more than $9 trillion in assets.
• Developed countries have failed to provide clear signals on how they will fulfill the commitment to mobilize $100 billion annually in climate finance, leaving the leadership of vulnerable developing countries unmatched by sufficient financial support.
