WRI 2010 Organizational Greenhouse Gas Inventory

WRI's 2010 greenhouse gas inventory recorded 4,309 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, a significant increase from 2009 due to the expanded inclusion of all Scope 3 categories. Using 2010 as a base year, WRI has set 2020 targets to reduce Scope 2 electricity emissions by 50%, business travel emissions by 20%, and all other Scope 3 categories by 20%.

• WRI's 2010 greenhouse gas inventory totaled 4,309 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (mt CO2e), which is 2.3 times the 1,326 mt CO2e recorded in 2009.
• The increase in emissions between 2009 and 2010 is primarily due to the adoption of the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard, which expanded accounting to include purchased goods and services, waste generated in operations, fuel- and other energy-related activities, and end-of-life treatment of sold products. These four new categories represent 67 percent of the 2010 inventory.
• WRI established 2020 emissions reduction targets using 2010 as the base year, aiming for a 50 percent reduction in Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity, a 20 percent reduction in Scope 3 emissions from business travel, and a 20 percent reduction across all other Scope 3 categories.
