Nature-Based Solutions in Latin America and the Caribbean: Support From the Inter-American Development Bank

This briefing describes the Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) strategy to integrate nature-based solutions (NBS) into infrastructure investments across Latin America and the Caribbean to address investment gaps in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Agreement contributions.

• Nature-based solutions (NBS) are identified as tools for both climate change mitigation and adaptation that can maximize the impact of capital when combined with traditional gray infrastructure, improving cost-effectiveness, resilience, and performance.
• The IDB is utilizing its 2020 Mainstreaming Action Plan for Environmental and Social Sustainability (2021–25) to integrate NBS into its portfolio, specifically through cross-cutting action plans for natural capital, disaster risk management, and climate action.
• The IDB provides financial and technical support for integrated green-gray projects and helps clients establish the enabling conditions required for the adoption of NBS across key sectors.
• The IDB intends to increase support for clients to include NBS opportunity analysis and considerations throughout the entire project lifecycle, from the identification of investments to execution and within country agreements.
