Estimating the Impact of Corporate Science-based Emissions Targets on India’s Nationally Determined Contribution Goals

This research paper quantifies the impact of science-based targets (SBTs) from 22 Indian companies on India's 2030 NDC goals. It finds that these targets could reduce national GHG emissions by 0.51% to 0.62% and industry sector emissions by 1.89% to 2.4% by 2030, while slowing the companies' annual emissions growth from 3.89% to 3.07%.

• The full implementation of SBTs by the 22 studied companies could reduce India's total GHG emissions in 2030 by 0.51% to 0.62%, and reduce emissions specifically from the industry sector by 1.89% to 2.4% in 2030.
• Achieving SBTs would slow the annual emissions growth of the study companies from a business-as-usual (BAU) average compounded annual rate of 3.89% (2021-2030) to 3.07%. This would result in cumulative emissions reductions between 2021 and 2030 of 165.9 million MtCO2e for Scope 1 and 15.8 million MtCO2e for Scope 2.
• Prior sustainability goals influenced the adoption and type of SBTs. At least 40 of 56 companies had existing goals (such as renewable energy or energy efficiency) before committing to SBTs. Companies with prior goals were more likely to set absolute emissions reductions targets; 9 out of 11 companies with absolute-emissions-based SBTs had previous goals, compared to 7 out of 12 companies with intensity-based SBTs.
