A Time For Transformative Partnerships: How Multistakeholder Partnerships Can Accelerate the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The report identifies how multistakeholder partnerships can drive systemic, long-term change to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting four specific success factors that distinguish high-transformation partnerships from those with low potential.

• Partnerships accelerate SDG action when they align their design with the three characteristics of transformation: being systemic (affecting systems like energy, food, or water), long-term and sustained, and disruptive to the status quo.
• Transformative partnerships typically operate along a continuum that involves either changing external policies and practices or launching commercial products and services to address the SDGs.
• An evaluation of 41 SDG-focused partnerships identified four success factors that distinguish those with high transformation potential from those with low potential: a clear understanding of the system of interest, agreement on joint vision and goals, a performance tracking system integrating systems thinking, and the leveraging of external stakeholders.
