Company Profile: Mahindra Group

The Mahindra Group aims for carbon neutrality by 2040, with 20 of its companies committing to science-based targets. In FY 2017-2018, the group reduced total emissions by 14% to 618,439 t CO2 and increased renewable energy use by over 100%. The group maintains a $418 million green product portfolio spanning electric mobility, renewables, and sustainable real estate.

• The Mahindra Group has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. Chairman Anand Mahindra has pledged to set science-based targets (SBTs) for all group companies, with 20 companies already committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative. Notably, Mahindra Sanyo Special Steel (MSSSPL) was the first metals company globally to have an approved SBT.
• Total emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3 decreased by 14.0% in FY 2017-2018, falling to 618,439 t CO2 from 718,986 t CO2 the previous year. While Scope 1 emissions fell by 2.4% and Scope 3 emissions dropped by 25.0%, Scope 2 emissions rose by 7.1% to 226,950 tCO2.
• The group has significantly increased its renewable energy adoption, with usage jumping over 100% to 8,972 MWh in FY 2017-2018. This includes the installation of a 269kW peak solar power plant at a tractor warehouse in Jaipur, which meets 27% of that plant's power needs.
• Mahindra operates a $418 million green product portfolio focusing on electric mobility, renewables, clean technology, and green housing. The group has introduced India's first electric SUV (e-KUV1OO) and first electric bus (e-COSMO), and every building constructed by Mahindra Lifespaces is a green building.
• The group has implemented various resource efficiency and sustainability measures, including certifying 10 production plants as zero waste to landfill and planting over 16 million trees across India. In the automotive sector, the Igatpuri plant was the first in India and second globally to achieve zero waste to landfill certification.
