First Movers Coalition: Status Report

The First Movers Coalition (FMC), co-launched by the World Economic Forum and the US government, has established a significant private sector demand signal for breakthrough low-carbon technologies. With 99 corporate members making over 125 commitments across seven hard-to-abate sectors, the initiative aims to generate an annual demand of approximately $16 billion for near-zero technologies by 2030, resulting in an estimated 31 million tonnes of annual CO2e reductions.

• The First Movers Coalition (FMC) has created the largest private sector demand signal globally for breakthrough low-carbon technologies, which are typically responsible for 80% or more of carbon abatement.
• As of the report, 99 corporate members have made over 125 commitments across seven sectors: aviation, shipping, trucking, aluminium, cement/concrete, steel, and carbon dioxide removal. These commitments are projected to create an annual demand of approximately $16 billion for near-zero technologies by 2030, reducing annual emissions by an estimated 31 million tonnes of CO2e.
• The FMC partners with 13 governments and conducted in-country workshops in Brazil, India, and South Africa during 2023-24 to discuss policy, regulation, and finance levers to accelerate domestic supply.
