Building a Better SUV

The Union of Concerned Scientists reports that SUVs and light trucks in the United States have lower fuel economy and higher fatality rates than cars, contributing to higher consumer costs and increased global warming emissions. To address this, the organization designed the 'UCS Guardian' and 'UCS Guardian XSE' prototypes, which utilize existing technologies—such as unibody frames, improved aerodynamics, and electronic stability control—to increase fuel economy and safety. The report suggests that implementing these technologies across the light truck fleet could significantly reduce U.S. oil consumption and save thousands of lives annually.

• In 2002, light trucks (SUVs, pickups, and minivans) had a fuel economy approximately 30 percent lower than cars, resulting in an average light truck owner paying over $11,000 for gasoline over the vehicle's life.
• SUVs present significant safety risks compared to cars; in 2000, the overall fatality rate for SUVs was eight percent higher than for cars, and the fatality rate for single-vehicle rollover accidents was nearly three times higher.
• The proposed UCS Guardian model achieves a fuel economy of 27.8 mpg through a lighter unibody frame, better engine, and improved aerodynamics, which would save owners more than $2,500 in lifetime gasoline costs.
• The UCS Guardian XSE model reaches over 36 mpg by incorporating a six-speed automatic transmission and high-strength steel and aluminum, reducing lifetime gasoline costs by more than $4,300.
• Widespread adoption of the safety and fuel economy technologies used in the Guardian models could save over 2,900 lives annually and reduce U.S. oil use by 800,000 to two million barrels per day by 2015.
