Got Science, Not News Corporation

A 2012 analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that climate science coverage in Fox News Channel and the Wall Street Journal's opinion pages was overwhelmingly misleading, frequently dismissing scientific consensus and denigrating scientists. The report recommends that News Corporation develop standards for accurate communication and distinguish between scientific evidence and policy debates.

• Between February 2012 and July 2012, 93% of climate science representations on the Fox News Channel were misleading, with 37 out of 40 references failing to accurately portray the science. The most frequent tactic was the broad dismissal of the scientific consensus regarding human-induced climate change.
• From August 2011 to July 2012, 81% of climate science content in the Wall Street Journal's opinion section—including op-eds, columns, editorials, and letters—was misleading (39 of 48 references). This coverage frequently involved mocking science, cherry-picking data, attacking individual scientists, and accusing researchers of fudging data or being driven by financial self-interest.
• Both media outlets exhibited a strong tendency to provide negative coverage of climate actions intended to reduce global warming emissions, encompassing both government policies and individual lifestyle choices.
