Half the Oil Plan

The 'Half the Oil' plan proposes reducing U.S. oil use by over 11 million barrels per day by 2035. This is to be achieved through efficiency gains in vehicles and buildings (saving nearly 8 million barrels per day) and innovations such as electric vehicles and biofuels (saving over 4 million barrels per day).

Specific targets include doubling fuel efficiency for new cars and light trucks by 2025 (4 mbd), doubling efficiency for most commercial vehicles by 2030 (1 mbd), improving efficiency for planes, trains, and ships (0.5 mbd), and retrofitting buildings and boilers (2 mbd).
• Technological innovations are projected to save over 4 million barrels of oil per day by 2035. This includes ensuring more than 40 percent of new vehicles sold by 2035 are electric (1.5 mbd), producing 40 billion gallons of non-food biofuels (1.5 mbd), and expanding transportation options (1.5 mbd).
