Mujeres, empleos verdes y pueblos indígenas: construyendo el camino para una recuperación justa y resiliente en América Latina

This policy brief by the Latinoamérica Sostenible alliance (comprising Espacio Público, Transforma, and Ethos) analyzes the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on women, green jobs, and rural indigenous communities in Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. It argues that the pandemic exacerbated structural inequalities and that regional recovery strategies must prioritize social inclusion, gender equity, and environmental sustainability to be just and resilient.

• The COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant regression in women's labor participation in Latin America, with a contraction of 18% in female employment compared to 14% for men between the first and second quarters of 2020. By 2021, the female labor occupation rate was 43.6%, which was 23.5% lower than the rate for men (67.7%).
• In Mexico, the pandemic led to a sharp increase in maternal mortality, rising from 33.8 deaths per 100,000 estimated births in 2019 to 46.6 in 2020, with COVID-19 accounting for 21.6% of total deaths as of October 2020. Additionally, 145,719 more pregnancies than expected were recorded between 2020 and 2021, including 21,575 adolescent pregnancies.
