COP30: An Integrated Vision for Climate Change and Trade

Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, COP30 President-Designate, announced the creation of the Integrated Forum on Climate Change and Trade during the WTO Public Forum on 17 September 2025. This flagship initiative aims to bridge the gap between climate and trade regimes by providing a non-binding, interdisciplinary space for government officials and experts to design solutions for a sustainable global economy.

• A primary objective of the Forum is to establish shared 'climate criteria' to define and verify the environmental performance of products and services, aiming to distinguish genuine green action from greenwashing and prevent unfair trade barriers.
• The Forum intends to create a 'Rosetta Stone' for carbon accounting by mapping different national and industrial methodologies to build a shared reference for the integrity of results in low-carbon markets.
• The initiative will focus on accelerating the transition from fossil fuels by addressing supply chains and standards for renewable energy technologies, while ensuring developing countries share in the prosperity of the critical minerals economy.
• The document highlights the economic impact of trade on climate technology, noting that solar power costs fell by 90% over fifteen years and that UNCTAD valued trade in 'green goods' at 1.9 trillion dollars in 2022.
