Mistra Geopolitics: Sustainability, stability and competitiveness for Sweden in the Anthropocene
Summary
The Mistra Geopolitics programme, running from 2017 to 2020, is an interdisciplinary research effort involving six Swedish core partners and international institutes. It aims to help Sweden navigate geopolitical insecurity and leverage innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The programme is organized into five work packages: WP1 focuses on the frame of geopolitics and security in the Anthropocene; WP2 analyzes transnational impacts on Sweden including trade and migration; WP3 examines global governance responses to environmental security risks; WP4 explores the link between geopolitical landscapes and the SDGs; and WP5 integrates these findings through a co-creation process and foresight scenarios to strengthen Swedish competitiveness.
Key insights
- The Mistra Geopolitics programme is structured into five interrelated work packages designed to examine the dynamic interactions between geopolitics, human security, and global environmental change. These include an inquiry into security threats of environmental change (WP1), an analysis of transnational impacts on Sweden such as trade and migration (WP2), an examination of global governance responses (WP3), a study of how geopolitical interests affect the Sustainable Development Goals (WP4), and a foresight process to identify strategies for Swedish competitiveness (WP5).
- The programme seeks to develop strategies for Sweden and Swedish actors to manage increasing geopolitical insecurity while utilizing innovation and technological development. This requires balancing the objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the Swedish Environmental Quality Objectives.
- The research employs a co-creation approach involving stakeholders from the public, private, and civil society sectors to ensure empirical research is relevant for policy and action. This process includes the use of interactive visualization tools, such as the Norrköping Decision Arena platform, and the development of explorative scenarios and cyclical horizon scanning.
