Water Innovation for Circularity and Enhanced Resilience (WICER)

The WICER project aims to enhance Iraq's resilience to water scarcity and climate change through three workstreams focusing on resilient water management in the Al-Udhym basin, market-based urban circularity for sanitation and resource recovery, and the development of rural circularity and Nature-based solutions.

• The Water Innovation for Circularity and Enhanced Resilience (WICER) project addresses water security challenges in Iraq caused by environmental degradation, prolonged conflict, and climate change. It employs three synergetic workstreams: Workstream A focuses on resilient water management, including a planning model for the Al-Udhym basin and a course with the University of Sulaimani; Workstream B focuses on urban circularity through organic waste mapping and business models for resource recovery; and Workstream C focuses on rural circularity via the documentation of good practices and the development of Nature-based solutions/sanitation systems.
• The project aims for immediate capacity enhancement in rural circularity, urban sanitation, and resilient water planning, with long-term goals to implement resilient water policies, develop viable urban resource recovery business models, and scale decentralized rural circularity options.
