Study Visit to Jagdishpur, 17-18 February 2012

A summary of a study visit conducted by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in Jagdishpur, focusing on the testing of advanced cookstoves, off-grid lighting, and alternative energy sources.

• TERI operates a testing area in Jagdishpur for off-grid lighting and cookstoves, which includes pilot study areas in several villages and is linked to the Surya project with the Scripps Institute (UCSD) to measure black carbon emissions. Testing for advanced stoves covers usability, start-up, and combustion properties, featuring both natural draft and forced draft designs; the latter require prepared biomass like wood pellets or chips and necessitate operational training for villagers.
• Household energy use in the region is characterized by the use of multiple stoves, including standard concrete/clay chulhas, LPG stoves, and advanced stoves. While advanced stoves are preferred—particularly those with front loading for intensity adjustment—LPG availability and cost can lead to intermittent use or fuel-switching. Additionally, biogas is an option for households with cattle, though it struggles to compete where subsidized LPG is available, despite the benefit of providing waste slurry for fertilizer.
• Portable solar lanterns are provided for a small daily fee and are charged via a micro-grid using PV cells. The portability of these lanterns is considered valuable as it allows users to move the light between locations, such as from a shop to a home.
