- Indoor air pollution in India causes an estimated 488,200 deaths annually. Despite global trends showing a decline in the proportion of people without clean cooking energy (from 39% in 2009 to 33% in 2030), it is projected that 53% of the Indian population will still lack access to clean cooking energy by 2030.
- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has designated forced draft technology as the primary technology for promotion. Under a national biomass cookstove initiative started in 2009, the government provides financial support: 50% of the cost for natural draft stoves and INR 700 for forced draft stoves.
- A significant gap exists between market availability and quality standards; while 15 to 20 cookstove models are available in the market, only 4 to 5 meet existing standards. India currently suffers from a lack of testing infrastructure, with only four operational facilities.
- Consumer adoption is driven primarily by affordability, followed by the time spent on cooking and ease of usage. Research indicates that the initial cost of the technology has a greater impact on consumer choice than subsidies on fuel.
- The DFID-TERI initiative aims for the Large Scale Dissemination (LSD) of 100,000 stoves, focusing on market creation and sustainable, replicable business models to avoid the failures of previous top-down, subsidy-driven approaches.
- A study in Ethiopia using Household Energy Economic Analysis (HHEA) found that a consumer's utility for a cookstove depends more on product-specific attributes than on socio-economic factors like income. This suggests that improving product design is more effective for adoption than focusing on non-technical factors.
- The 'energy ladder' and 'fuel stacking' are complementary phenomena: as income increases, total energy consumption rises, and while traditional fuels are still used, new fuels are added (stacking). Over time, the proportion of dependence on traditional fuels decreases as efficiency increases.
