The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) has launched the Initiative on Producer to Consumer Sustainability (P2CS), a platform designed to improve the sustainability of international trade by analyzing production-to-consumption systems (PCSs). The initiative combines innovative supply chain modelling with multidisciplinary governance analysis to increase transparency and identify opportunities for sustainable trade practices.

• SEI identifies a need for 'next-generation' footprint accounting because traditional environmental footprint accounts are often too crude, relying on country-level data and aggregated proxies that fail to link impacts to specific production areas.
• Next-generation footprint accounting will introduce four specific improvements: enhanced spatial resolution to link consumers to specific production areas, explicit accounting of socio-economic benefits, improved attributional clarity regarding responsibility among actors, and the consideration of indirect impacts like waste and indirect land-use change.
• The initiative utilizes specific SEI tools to trace commodities: SEI-PCS traces commodities from a specific production site, such as a municipality, to the first consumer, while IOTA traces commodities from the producer country to the final consumption country through various processing stages.
• The first phase of the P2CS initiative (2015–2016) focuses on pilot projects involving the production of soy and beef in Brazil and oil palm in South East Asia for European markets.
• P2CS aims to reshape supply chain governance by appraising existing risk-management tools (such as voluntary standards and consumer labelling), analyzing stakeholder roles through co-inquiry, and identifying new governance mechanisms to overcome decision-making bottlenecks.
• The initiative is supported by core funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) for its first two years.
