FACT SHEET The Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning - Integrated Benefits Calculator (LEAP-IBC)

The LEAP-IBC is an integrated planning tool that allows governments to model emissions of greenhouse gases and short-lived climate pollutants to estimate resulting benefits for human health, crop yields, and global temperature. It combines LEAP emissions scenarios with the GEOS-Chem atmospheric model to provide national-scale estimates of avoided premature deaths and crop losses, and is currently available for 71 countries.

• LEAP-IBC calculates human health and agricultural benefits by deriving total national emissions from LEAP and using the GEOS-Chem global atmospheric chemistry transport model to estimate concentrations of surface ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). It estimates premature mortality from heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases, as well as yield losses for soybean, maize, rice, and wheat.
• The tool estimates climate impacts by calculating the global change in radiative forcing for both long-lived greenhouse gases, such as CO2, and short-lived climate forcers, which is then converted into global temperature changes in yearly time slices.
• LEAP-IBC is currently available for 71 countries. Twelve of these countries are using the tool to support national planning for SLCPs as part of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition's SNAP Initiative.
