This fact sheet describes PEGaSus, a project funded by the European Research Area NETwork on Sustainable Animal Production (2017–2020) aimed at improving phosphorus (P) efficiency in pig and poultry farming to enhance EU food security and reduce environmental burdens.

• The European Union is highly dependent on external sources for mineral phosphorus, importing 90% of its supply, which creates vulnerabilities in the global supply chain and threatens EU food security.
• The PEGaSus project focuses on monogastrics, specifically pigs and chickens, because they are critical to global food security but act as major sources of phosphorus losses and excretion.
• The strategic objectives of PEGaSus include identifying ways to increase the bioavailability and digestibility of plant-derived phosphorus to reduce the need for supplements, minimizing phosphorus discharges and runoff into aquatic ecosystems, and reducing emissions from pig and chicken husbandry.
• PEGaSus implements several key activities to achieve its goals, including the creation of a bio-economic model to assess the impact of P management on farm economics, animal and lab experiments to study feeding strategies and genetic factors in pigs and poultry, and the quantification of phosphorus reuse potential from slurry, bone, and manure.
