Participation and learning for climate change adaptation: a case study of the Swedish forestry sector

This book chapter examines a deliberative process involving stakeholders in the Swedish forestry sector to determine how participatory approaches facilitate learning regarding climate change adaptation needs and options.

• The participatory process resulted in increased individual learning for stakeholders, evidenced by shifts in how they articulated their knowledge, values, and perceptions concerning climate change effects, vulnerability, and adaptation measures.
• Stakeholders expressed a desire for the establishment of multi-stakeholder and multi-level arenas to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing on climate change adaptation within the Swedish forestry sector.
• The authors suggest that further research is required to determine how participatory learning approaches can be scaled up to ensure the mainstreaming of adaptation.
