The Pacific Ocean: A Case for Coordinated Action

This document is a preview of results from a book regarding the valuation of oceans and the economic impacts of action or inaction, focusing on the Pacific Ocean as a case study for the need for integrated regional policies to address multiple human-induced stressors.

• The Pacific Ocean is a critical global asset, comprising nearly half of the world's total ocean area and bordering 50 countries or territories. It is essential for regulating biochemical cycles and the global climate, while supporting the cultural identity, income, and nutrition of millions of people from Alaska to Tuvalu.
• The Pacific Ocean possesses immense biodiversity, including the highest species richness of invertebrates and exploited fish. The Indo-Pacific region's coral triangle is specifically identified as one of the global epicentres of marine biodiversity.
• The Pacific Ocean is currently subjected to six human-induced threats: pollution, sea-level rise, ocean warming, ocean acidification, hypoxia (deoxygenation), and the over-exploitation of marine resources. Because it faces all these overlapping pressures, the document argues there is an urgent need for integrated regional policies to address these stressors.
